Have you ever watched someone freeze on the dive-board at the swimming pool? It's something to see. Usually it's a kid who just realized just how high the board is over the water, and freezes. From the vantage point of the swimmers in the water, it's no big deal, just take the step, but for the poor guy staring down, taking that step is inconceivable. Unimaginable. Impossible, just --
Aaaugh!
That's what procrastination is. You freeze before the jump. It's being stuck on the diving board, wobbling. The wobble is composed of worrying and catastrophizing, self blame and inertia. You can't move.
You can't move.So what do you do? Start. Start
anywhere. Increase the wobble -- build up momentum. And then
jump.
Think it's impossible? Use your worry and fear and everything else in the way as psychic fuel. Build them up. (Trust me -- I'm going somewhere with this.) Ready? One, two, three -- catastrophize!
Can't write? Sit and start. Jump in.That's it. Put pen to paper and write anything. "This sucks. I don't want to. I'm going to lose my job because I'm utter crap. And then everyone will know it. I can't write worth squat about anything. Even with this research it's too much to summarize, dammit. People with e-stores are going to get a nasty surprise with this
new credit card thingy in June. Man, that's gonna hurt....what am I supposed to tell them? What do they need to know... Where do I go to find out? Who do I talk to?"
Answer your own questions. Get the ball rolling, all you need is a push.
Can't clean the garage ? Clean the garage. Jump in."Why am I
keeping this--what the--what kind of nutcase would take all this expired
stuff and save it for later? Only a madman, I tell you. What was I
thinking? If a fire breaks out we're doomed.
Doomed. I'd trip and break my neck on that thing in the middle --what the heck
is that, anyway --and they'll fall over my smouldering body....The local shelter can use these old chairs, maybe. Hey, Louie's kid can use that playhouse and the high-chair, I mean, mine are are graduating from high school this year, not as if they'll be using
those. *beat* Please God, tell me they're smarter than that."
Sort, give away, dispose. Keep going.
Can't deal with your career? Deal with your career. Jump in."
Why am I doing this? Why am I
doing this? Why am I doing
this? I'm going crazy. I'm not going anywhere. Who am I doing this all for? What's it for? Where do I want to go?" Answer your own questions. Keep going.
Can't? Do it. Set things in motion. Take the step. Keep moving. Jump in.
